Character Information

Name: Hat Kid (Real name is unknown)
Canon: A Hat in Time
Canon Point: Post Game - Finally returning back home
Age: Around 10 or so? At least in appearance
History: Wiki

Personality: While not truly a silent protagonist, Hat Kid is known for at least not speaking up often - enough so that other characters bring it to attention. So much so that she's reluctant to bring up her own name if asked. But thankfully, there is still plenty that can be inferred about her based on actions, what she has, and most conveniently - the diary she writes into everyday. Already the diary gives a sense that Hat Kid is serious about keeping a record of everything that happens to her, even going as far as apologizing to her "future self" for not being able to describe properly the weirder things that happened. Implying that she might eventually reread them again. Likely some time after she's traveled to more planets and had more adventures, or eventually decided to settle down. She might be a lot better at just expressing herself through writing than speaking.

It is worth mentioning that Hat Kid is surprisingly smart for her age. Besides a sentient roomba, and prior to co-op being implemented, she was the only one who lived aboard the spaceship. A spaceship that not only she knows how to pilot, but she even designed. A ship somehow completely functional despite that it appears to be made mostly out of wood, and not looking even remotely aerodynamic. Other than rooms being sealed off by airlocked tunnels, the occasional pipe and machine here and there, parts of the ship resemble more of a retro home than anything from outer space.

Though it may have something to do with Hat Kid's interest in Earthly items, which get dubbed as simply being relics. Two examples being a miniature train set and a burger shaped cushion she discovers early on. Once the pieces were found and put together, she keeps them both on display like a museum piece - velvet rope and everything. It could also be that Hat Kid just really likes childish things...understandably given her appearance. Her bedroom has a pillow pile the size of a swimming pool (diving board included) - Which has a secret compartment to keep the diary. She's got a yellow tube slide that goes up into the mail room, overflowing with letters and unkempt. The computer in the machine room barely has internet function, but also runs a corgi text based adventure game. And it goes on.

One of the few things she does put importance in are the Time Pieces, the hourglasses that power her ship. Getting them all back is the upmost priority or else she would be stranded on the planet forever, or not have enough fuel to return back home. There is also one other thing that Time Pieces can do - as the name implies, time manipulation. If one breaks it'll rewind everything back to repair itself. Usually effecting the last few seconds, but potentially more. They can also sometimes form something called a Time Rift, which appear to be interdimensional pockets. They can range from rejected Mario Sunshine levels an undersea realm with stain glass and clocktowers - perhaps having some connection back to Hat Kid's world - to a twisted amalgamation of past events at that location. Since Time Rifts seem to be only from Time Pieces that went undiscovered by anyone, it's possible that they could happen naturally if they aren't 'contained' for too long. Or perhaps the impact from space damaged them more severely than the others that they actually began to leak.

The tl;dr, it was important to Hat Kid to them back even if she could get back home another way, they can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. Already they were starting to be misused once the word got out, and having to get into a fight with the worst offenders until they finally gave up. She knows what the Time Pieces can do better than anyone else does. And they probably have even more secrets, though she would never tell anyone.

This is also what exactly lead to the falling out with Mustache Girl. Hat Kid turned down the crime fighting proposal since she already knew what kind of abuse that was going to lead to, that and she had already had enough clues about Mustache Girl's violent streak. In the end, the Time Pieces were stolen and the world below turned into a totalitarian dystopia. Hat Kid had to do something about this somehow, though probably wasn't expecting so many others were going to rally beside her in the confrontation. It actually would've been impossible without their help.

Even with all that though, she does still feel a bit empathetic to Mustache Girl's initial plight. In some ways they are surprisingly alike, but handle things so differently. It was the first time ever Hat Kid actually considers letting just one Time Piece go to help someone out, thinking that Mustache Girl might've learned her lesson by now but still needed something to get her island back. It's hard to say if/when Hat Kid will ever give one away again.

Although this level of seriousness is rarely if ever seen. Hat Kid acts like a kid, through and through. It's generally hard to tell that she might be smarter than she looks when she's always so wide-eyed and curious about everything around her...and often a pest to some. She's not nefarious, but she does like to tease and figure out how far she can push things. But she seems to only really do this to adults, and only the ones that try to be mean to her first. She's got a few of her own bones to pick with the Mafia especially, namely a smashed window. This can sometimes make her a little petty about things, and not above cheating if she knows the other side is doing it too. In fact - being the better cheater makes it more satisfying to win!

But over all, Hat Kid is just a very energetic explorer of many talents and mysteries. She's relatively harmless and would rather be someone's friend, but she will act up if somebody is being unfair or cruel. There's not too much evidence for how she deals with sadness or those kinds of emotions, best guess would be internalizing it. She'll do what she wants, and mostly will hang out in new places for the experience, learn new things, and all the things like that.

Abilities: Most of Hat Kid's abilities come from hats (what a surprise), or the badges attached to enhance them. Her favorite and most iconic being a purple top hat, which doesn't seem to have any other purpose than locating Time Pieces. Other abilities usually has some connection to what sort of hat it is. For example a winged cap lets her run faster, a snow cap turns her into an ice sculpture, or a sci-fi visor that can slow down time.

Other parts of Hat Kid's arsenal include the umbrella she stole from Mafia Town, which she wields like a sword - and later had it upgraded to a grappling hook. The umbrella is also very useful for surviving dangerous falls. Which...as the main character of a 3D platformer, happens pretty frequently. Hat Kid is very skilled at making jumps, wall climbs, tightrope, and just parkour in general. Making it easy to get into - or on places that she probably isn't meant to.

There is a scooter she owns too, to make it easier to get to and from places in junction with the sprint hat. But it very likely did not make it with her.

She also has a vast amount of creativity, ingenuity, and adaptability. Along with knowing how to build a spaceship, she is also really good at making things out of yarn - and appear to be the thing that all her hats are made from. So it's possible that they might have the same effect if anyone wore them. It also makes it convenient if a hat gets lost or ruined, she can always make a new one. But it seems her stitching capabilities go even beyond that, since in the very last scene of the game she had a plushie of every character she met. Presumably also all made by hand.

Strengths: Friendly, clever, uses time powers responsibly (most of the time), agile, cute as heck
Weaknesses: Shy, gullible, easily distracted, powerless without hat(s), childish sense of humor/mischievous

God/Shinki: God
Why?: Hat Kid is perfectly capable being independent and making choices for herself, despite everything that would prove otherwise. And along with already being an otherworldly being (she has been classified as an alien, despite looking human) there's also the fact she keeps hourglasses that can reset time, or show glimpses of the past. She could easily be godlike now if she wanted to. It's just a good thing she chooses not to.
Top 3 Choices: Skuld, Caerus, or Janus
God Type: Helping others is fine and all, but really? she would want to do prayers that sound enjoyable. Being a god does have a couple traits that would make it really neat. At least for a little while. And being a god should be fun right? Right??

It's hard to know how well she will get along with authority though, or more serious events for that matter. She probably will find the Far Shore pretty interesting for awhile, but sooner or later she would really want to get home already. Whether this would make her work harder, or potentially get on the nerves of the Gods of Fortune. Or try something else entirely.
Power: Foresight, or Flash Precognition; the ability to see outcomes seconds to minutes before they happen. Though limited primarily to objects and their trajectory or attacks. She can even intervene with the outcome if she chooses or can react in time.

Anything Else?: Hat Kid will be arriving with only her top hat and umbrella as far as items go. The rest will either have to be improvised or regained. Although, her temple will probably end up being a replica of her ship (permanently docked on the temple grounds, yet somehow still having a spacey cinematic view when you go inside).

Prefer to have her paired with a shinki that wouldn't be too difficult to handle.
